A NIGHT OF TOM SWAFFORD COMPOSITIONS IN AN IMPROV SETTING WITH SOME OF THE AREA’S FINEST
Tom Swafford, violin and compositions;
Noah Campbell, saxophone;
Gregory T. Rourke, guitar;
Nathan McBride, bass;
Luther Gray, drums
I’m calling this one “Sifting Through Boxes” –
I’ve been going back through 35 years of my old music: a ballad, a jazz waltz, a violin concerto, an orchestra piece, a groovy funk tune from high school no one’s ever heard, and sketches of West African inspired polyrhythms, chord changes from a ’60’s psychedelic hit, etc. I’m assembling this group of stellar improvisors to see what might transpire if we use these fragments as jumping off points for improvisations.
I’m really excited to get to play with these excellent musicians. It’s an opportunity for me to get back in touch with some of my old musical selves and find some ideas to take on to my next musical self, whoever that might be.
